Really? Seriously?

From the BBC:

[Clinton's] aides earlier admitted she "misspoke" in claiming she and daughter Chelsea "ran with our heads down" when arriving in Bosnia in 1996.
...

In her speech last week, Mrs Clinton said: "I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."

...
But a video clip played by CBS on Monday showed Mrs Clinton and Chelsea walking across the tarmac smiling and waving before stopping to shake hands with Bosnia's acting president and meet an eight-year-old girl.

Mrs Clinton said in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday: "So I made a mistake. That happens. It proves I'm human, which you know, for some people, is a revelation."

Okay. Seriously. I can see a Green Beret getting confused about when he did and didn't take sniper fire. But how often do you come under sniper fire if you're the daughter of an affluent Park Ridge family who goes to Wellesley as an undergrad, to Yale for law school, to Arkansas to live in the governor's mansion, and then to D.C. to live in the White House? How on earth do you "misremember" that or "misspeak" about that?

Seriously.

Hey, Mike, what do you make of this? I know you're supporting Hillary, but I also know that you've been critical of her in the past for refusing to admit ever making a mistake (especially on her war authorization vote). To call this a "mistake," ironically seems like more of the same refusal to be accountable for what she says and does. I mean, most politicians have that problem, but this seems worse than usual.

I like Hillary in a lot of ways. She's informed, she's smart, she makes sense on a number of issues that matter to me. But this crap worries me. She misrepresented her landing in Bosnia on three separate occasions, over the course of at least a couple months. That strikes me as not only dishonest but also tactically inept. Unless she really does remember taking heavy sniper fire during a desperate sprint to her armored vehicle, she knew that there were news cameras there capturing every second of her landing--the handshakes with all the American soldiers, hugging the eight-year-old, taking a moment with a class full of seventh graders. She had to know she'd get called on it at some point.

I really don't know what to make of this, other than to say it looks bad and would be unbelievable fodder for McCain in the general election. Mostly, I hope she's lying. The alternative is that she's developing a Ronald Reagan memory, in which things happened as he wanted them to have happened (or possibly as they happened in one of his chimp movies).

I'm less a Hillary supporter these days... was meaning to post on that. The Bosnia thing is part of the reason but it's more complicated than that. She's not striking me as the fighter she said she was. What was she doing hanging around with Richard Mellon Scaife? Sigh.

Maybe she's hoping he'll take a second crack at impeaching her husband--to rally the Democratic party behind the Clintons, again.
