$1 million for a Woodstock museum?

I'm really not that into hippies but Woodstock was, um, part of our cultural heritage, no? So if people are going to accuse my Senator of "pork barrel" spending by getting $1 million for a Woodstock museum then I want to know how much we spend every year creating and maintaining memorials to the military. Of course, I don't object to spending on military memorials either. Preserving our cultural heritage is kind of a good thing for the government to do.

Getting it On for Six Years

David Rees has posted all six years of Get Your War On.

Karl Marx once wrote that history repeats itself so that what begins as tragedy returns as comedy. As Rees makes clear, the peculiar, um, genius of the Bush administration has been to compress history so drastically that it's tragedy and comedy all at once.

In honor of our Decider in Charge and of Rees's six years commemorating the decider's brilliance, I give you an amateurish collage of GYWO. (You'll probably have to click on the link to be able to read it.)

Genocide

I have no problem calling what the Tuks did to the Armenians during World War I a genocide. I'm not sure why it's more urgent for the US House to pass a resolution recognizing a 90-year-old atrocity than to do something about the ongoing killing in Darfur. But, sure, it was a genocide. Call a killing a killing.

But now that our Representatives have stood up and denounced Turkey's systematic killing and relocation of Armenians from 1915-1917, they should show real bravery and decency do the same for the US's systematic killing and relocation of most of the country's native peoples from 1607 to 1900.

Giving New Meaning to "Blowback"

Unnamed scientists working for the US Air Force's Wright Laboratory have just been awarded an Ig Nobel Peace Prize for their pioneering work on a chemical weapon designed to make enemy troops sexually irresistible to one another.

No news on whether they actually developed a "gay bomb" and whether it works if they did. A big part of me hopes that it does and that queer militants get their hands on it. Imagine those chemicals ending up in Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's coffee. Or dropped on the crowds at an Atlanta Braves game. The mind boggles.

On the other hand, it's a weapon that the US military ultimately would have to avoid using. Imagine if the wind shifted, and the Pentagon had to start issuing dishonorable discharges to entire platoons.

Although, probably the biggest worry is that this research will inspire the Vatican to start work on the "straight bomb" with the intention of dropping it on Europe.

Larry Craig has a defender

Okay, I don't think trying to solicit gay sex in a men's room is reason for anybody to lose their job, even though Republican Senator Larry Craig is an enormous hypocrite.

But... he tried to HAVE SEX IN A BATHROOM!

And look who's defending him, according to the New York Times:

"Mr. Craig had his defenders among the Republicans, including Senators Michael Crapo, also of Idaho, and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, both of whom said Mr. Craig was within his rights to remain and try to clear his name.

“Senator Craig is entitled to make his decision and I respect it,” Mr. Specter said. “Disorderly conduct is not moral turpitude and it is no basis for leaving the Senate.”

Mr. Crapo, a friend and ally on state issues, said he strongly supported Mr. Craig. “I look forward to working with him in the Senate as he resolves his legal battles,” said Mr. Crapo."

Crap-o! His name is Crap-o!

It's as if God Himself reached down from the heavens to tell me a fart joke.
